PENN STATE CRUISES PAST WINTHROP BY 25

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Penn State Nittany Lions have beaten the Winthrop Eagles in their season opener 93-68. ODDS Penn State was -13.5 and covered. The over/under was 142 which hit the over. HISTORY The Nittany Lions hit 18 three pointers which is a school record. It was an extremely efficient three-point shooting day as Penn State shot 47.4% from downtown. SHREWS STRONG START There is no doubt that Penn State exceeded expectations in head coach Micah Shrewsberry’s first year at the helm that included two Big Ten Tournament wins. Now, with his first recruiting class in uniform and some key transfers joining the blue and white Shrews’ team looks to take a big leap this season. There weren't many points if any that Penn State was not in sync. Shrews’ has this team prepared and ready to go. “I'm happy for the most part with how we played,” Shrewsberry said. THE FUNKY MONKEY Andrew Funk was the main man at Bucknell averaging 17.6 points per game last season. The former Bison won’t be the focal point this season on the offensive end but was extremely productive especially with his three point shooting. Funk shot 6-10 from downtown and finished with 22 points. STEADY JALEN Jalen Pickett was Penn State’s most consistent source of offense last season averaging 13.3 PPG and 4.4 APG. The former Siena product picked up right where he left off pacing the Nittany Lions with 23 points on 9/13 shooting as well as adding five assists both of which led the team. WHAT’S NEXT The Nittany Lions will look to get to 2-0 on the season on Thursday when they hold Loyola MD at 7 P.M. right back at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Greyhounds of the Patriot League lost their season over at. Depaul 72-66. You can listen to the game on the Penn State Sports Network and watch on BTN+.
